Solidarity Peace Trust calls for action from the AU on Zimbabwe In a letter sent to African leaders attending the African Union summit in Maputo on July 10-12, the Solidarity Peace Trust, an organisation of African church leaders, calls upon the AU to take measures to address the crisis in Zimbabwe. The Lawyers Committee for Human Rights and other human rights and civil society groups have formally endorsed the letter The letter states in part:"we are writing to you to urge you to take measures within the framework of the African Union to address the situation in Zimbabwe... [the] actions of the Zimbabwean government contravene key principles of the Constitutive Act of the African Union. These include respect for democratic principles, human rights, the rule of law and good governance; promotion of social justice to ensure balanced economic development; and respect for the sanctity of human life."
