Dr. Saad Eddin
Ibrahim
2002 LCHR Human Rights Award Honoree
Read
about Ibrahim's Case
Dr. Saad Eddin Ibrahim has dedicated his life to promoting democracy
and a vibrant civic life in Egypt. A pioneer of the Egyptian human
rights movement, Dr. Ibrahim founded the Cairo-based Ibn Khaldun
Center for Development Studies in 1988. In 2000, the Center was
forced to close and Dr. Ibrahim was arrested on political charges
and sentenced to seven years in prison. The Lawyers Committee honored
Dr. Ibrahim at our 2002 dinner. Because he was in prison, his wife,
Barbara, accepted the award on his behalf. With the help of the
Lawyers Committee, Dr. Ibrahim was acquitted on all charges and
released from prison in March 2003.
