Communications Assistant
New York Office
The Lawyers Committee for Human Rights works to create a secure
and humane world by advancing a strong and strategic human rights
agenda. Since our inception in 1978, our mission has been to advance
justice, human dignity and respect for the rule of law throughout
the world. To do this, we support and serve as a lifeline for local
human rights groups who fight for basic freedoms and peaceful change
in their own societies; protect refugees in flight from persecution
and repression; promote fair economic practices by creating global
safeguards for workers' rights; and advocate for the creation of
an international system of justice and accountability for the worst
human rights crimes.
This approach is rooted in the premise that the world's security
and stability depend on long-term efforts to advance justice, human
dignity, and respect for the rule of law in every part of the world.
Our role and reputation in the human rights community is as an organization
of advocates who provide substantive research, non-partisan legal
expertise, consensus building, and strategic advocacy to effect
positive change in respect for human rights.
The Lawyers Committee is currently seeking an energetic Communications
Assistant for its dynamic Communications Department. This
full-time position reports to the Communications Director and performs
projects as needed for other members of the department.
The Communications Assistant position breaks down into two equally
important areas: Programmatic and Administrative.
Program and Institutional Responsibilities
- Media relations and outreach for
various programs. The assistant acts as the link to communications
with various areas of the organization: attending their meetings,
helping edit their materials, and conducting outreach to press
on their behalf.
- Editor of the organization’s
internal newsletter. The Assistant will compile the organization’s
monthly internal newsletter.
- Media interview traffic.
The assistant handles some incoming press calls and connects journalists
to program experts.
- General writing. The assistant
is called upon to write press releases and other materials for
general audiences.
- Research - as needed for
program and communications.
- Managing interns. As needed,
the assistant will manage summer and semester interns.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Managing the infrastructure of the
department: managing financial paperwork and vendor relationships
for the department, filing, scheduling meetings for the Director
and other members of the department, photocopying, data entry.
- Overseeing production of
press packets and other materials for the media and key constituents;
- Fulfilling requests for materials by email and mail from media
and the general public;
- Handling requests for publications
as needed, monitoring inventory of books and videos and maintaining
archive of institutional materials;
- Handling interaction with vendors
(clippings service, fax blast services, conference call services,
etc.);
- Administrative tasks for program
needs - compiling press materials, photocopying,
formatting short reports.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of two years experience in a fast-paced
environment calling for self-motivation and independent judgment,
attention to detail, direct involvement in operations, and professionalism.
Experience working with a human rights NGO and/or a newspaper,
television station or other media outlet preferred.
- College degree or equivalent experience;
- Strong working knowledge of MS Word and database
programs (e.g. OnContact CMS), familiarity with e-mail and the
