Statement by the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (CDH) on the Hearing Held by the Military Court/2nd Edition (4/17/03) Statement by the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (CDH) on the Hearing Held by the Military Court (4/16/03) Joint Press Release of ASADHO-KATANGA, CDH and CVDHO (4/15/03) Human Rights Defenders Project |
Human Rights Defenders in the Democratic Republic of Congo On Wednesday April 16, two prominent human rights
defenders were arrested in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo.
The two advocates, Prince Kumwamba Nsapu, Deputy Director of Finance
and Administration of the African Association for the Defence of
Human Rights (ASADHO/KATANGA), and Gregoire Mulamba Tshisakamba,
General Secretary of the Human Rights and Humanitarian Law Center
(CHH), have worked closely with the Lawyers Committee for Human
Rights. After six days in detention facing charges of
“incitement to rebellion,” Mr. Kumwamba Nsapu and Mr.
Mulamba Tshisakamba were acquitted by the Democratic Republic of
Congo’s Military Court (COM) in Lubumbashi. In its decision,
the COM recognized that the actions of the individuals did not incite
the military to commit disobedient or disorderly acts. In doing
so, the COM made specific reference to new constitutional measures
relative to freedom of expression and association.
