Human Rights Award Dinner

For nearly 20 years the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights has honored individuals who have made significant contributions to the human rights movement at a dinner and ceremony held each Fall. Each year, the Lawyers Committee presents this prestigious award to individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights. Over 800 people attend the dinner, among them the nation’s pre-eminent lawyers, corporate leaders, and UN dignitaries, along with human rights advocates from around the world. Previous recipients of the Human Rights Award include: President Corazon Aquino, Zainab Bangura, Tom Bernstein, Judge Marvin E. Frankel, Amchok Thubten Gyamtso, Saad Eddin Ibrahim, Asma Jahangir, Hina Jilani, Fauziya Kassindja, Gerda Weissmann Klein, Archbishop Pius Ncube, Mary Robinson , Albie Sachs, Sima Samar, Natan Sharansky, Franklin Thomas, Salma Sobhan, George Soros, Xu Wenli & Jin Xu, and Bill Zabel.

Each year, more than 700 summer associates from over 60 law firms attend the reception, which includes a private viewing of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and an introduction to the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights. Many of New York’s top firms feature this event in their summer recruitment schedules because it demonstrates to prospective associates a commitment to providing meaningful pro bono opportunities. It also introduces summer associates to pro bono projects in the field of human rights and asylum representation.
