Send a letter to U.S. State Department officials expressing your concern and urge them to take action

Dear Secretary Powell [or Assistant Secretary of State Craner],

I am writing to you to express my grave concern about the rise of antisemitism in Europe and the inadequacy of the official response. I refer you to a report just published by the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, entitled “Fire and Broken Glass: The Rise of Antisemitism in Europe,” examining efforts by European governments and institutions to monitor and address antisemitism. (The report is available at http://www.lchr.org.) The report also concludes that the coverage of antisemitic violence in Europe by the U.S. Department of State’s annuals reports on human rights conditions and religious intolerance is inadequate.

I believe that the United States has a large role to play in urging its European allies to increase efforts to monitor and address antisemitism.

I urge you to improve the standards of the Department of State for reporting and action on racist violence world-wide, particularly in the annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices and Reports on Religious Freedom. The annual reporting done by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor must accurately reflect the nature and patterns of racist violence and of government actions to combat them.

Sincerely, Your Name
