Cases of Misconduct and Brutality

Each of these cases underscores different reasons to reform Mexico’s police and its judicial system. This sample ranges from the prosaic to the dramatic, illustrating pervasive abuses that prevent ordinary Mexicans from enjoying security in their homes and on the streets, and the safeguards of basic rights in the court system. Citizens' fear of interaction with the police has many origins in Mexico, from arbitrary detention to abuses by military personnel in police service; widespread disillusionment with the legal system stems from its complicity in allowing such violations to stand without sanction or remedy.
